Local teams to hold veterans fundraiser

The Dirtbag Baseball Club and Laurel Auto Group’s AAABA League team will work together to raise money for Veteran Community Intiative, Inc. of Johnstown (VCI) during Memorial Day weekend.

The two-day VCI Classic will be held at Point Stadium on Friday and Saturday, and a free youth baseball clinic will be held at the Point on Memorial Day.

The three-team tournament will include the Pittsburgh Outlaws 10-and-under travel baseball team and the Portage Gutter Rats as well as the Dirtbag Baseball Club.

The Dirtbag Baseball Club coaching staff and Laurel Auto Group will host a free youth baseball clinic (ages 6-12). The event will be held 10 a.m. to noon at the Point on Memorial Day. Each participating player will be asked to make a monetary donation to the VCI fundraiser.

After the clinic, the Dirtbags will host a second three-team tournament that includes Central Penn Renegades and the Juniata Honey Badgers.

All checks and donations may be made to the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. The Dirtbag Baseball Club and Laurel Auto Group will present 100 percent of the proceeds to VCI via the foundation.

Carbaugh, Seton Hill get to regional title game

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Richland High graduate Bobby Carbaugh was the winning pitcher and Penn Camrbria’s Jordan Fuller earned the save as Seton Hill University advanced to today’s title game in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional at Wake Forest’s Gene Hooks Field on Saturday evening. The Griffins roster includes several area players as well as current and former AAABA League players.

The Griffins beat PSAC East champion and No. 1-seed Millersville 12-2. The Griffins (42-15) roster includes redshirt junior right-hander Carbaugh, Bishop McCort product Jesse Cooper and Somerset graduate Austin Sleek. Cooper and Sleek are freshmen. Shippensburg features bedford graduate Marcus Shippey, who hasn’t appeared in the Atlantic Regional.

Additionally, Seton Hill has a AAABA League flavor as all three local players are in the league. Among the other Griffins with AAABA League ties are Mike Cima, Mike Nowicki, Dan Abbennante, Brent Daviault, Brendon Constantino and Anthony Fanelli.
