— Cambria Somerset Authority officials plan to have an electrician inspect their whitewater release valve today after the device at the Quemahoning Reservoir intake tower failed to close Saturday morning.
CSA Manager Earl Waddell said staff was completing the multiphase process to close the valve Saturday morning when it stopped, keeping the valve approximately 25 percent open.
“We’re hoping it’s electrical … but until we investigate further, we won’t know,” Waddell said.
Saturday’s issues canceled a second whitewater release that was planned for that weekend.
Fire dept. adding aerial truck
Richland Township supervisors approved a low bid that will add a 2013 aerial truck to Richland Volunteer Fire Department’s fleet.
Township officials unanimously accepted the $653,700 offer from E-One, which was approximately $60,000 less than the only other bid – one for a similar, identically equipped truck.
Township officials said the 75-foot truck contains a rear-mounted ladder, which was viewed by the fire department as a more maneuverable vehicle and a better fit for the department. Public Works director Rian Barker noted E-One’s offer included a lease option carrying a lower interest rate.
The township’s approval was necessary because a portion of the fire department’s funding comes from a dedicated mill of township taxes.
The aerial truck replaces a 1996 Spartan.
Teams pitching support to vets
Over Memorial Day weekend, two local baseball organizations will join forces to help support local veterans and their families. The Dirtbag Baseball Club and the Laurel Auto Group AAABA baseball teams will be raising money for Veterans Community Initiative (VCI).
The two-day VCI Classic will begin at 4:30 p.m. May 24 with a three-team tournament at Johnstown’s Point Stadium.
Organizers also will be conducting a free youth baseball clinic for children ages 6 to 12 from 10 a.m. to noon May 27 at the Point Stadium.
Each participating player will be asked to make a donation to the VCI fundraising event. Following the clinic, a second three-team event will be held.

Rothfus staff to visit Somerset
SOMERSET – Staff members of U.S. Rep. Keith Rothfus, R-Sewickley, will hold mobile office hours at the Somerset County Office Building from 9 a.m. to noon May 23.
Individuals representing the 12th district’s congressman will be on hand to help residents resolve any issues they have with the federal government.
